The CEO of Union Berlin has made clear that the German club won’t throw their plans out the window to sign Inter’s Robin Gosens just because they’re in the Champions League.
Speaking to German news outlet Kicker, via FCInterNews, Union CEO Oliver Ruhnert made clear that the Champions League new boys intend on sticking to their strategy and won’t break that to sign Gosens or any other player.
Union Berlin are looking to make reinforcements ahead of their first ever season in the Champions League.
One of the main targets that the club from the German capital have identified is Inter wingback Gosens.
The 28-year-old would certainly represent a big name acquisition for a team like Union.
The club are hardly known for being big spenders. They have gotten to where they are by betting on less well-known players who have performed beyond their price tags.
However, for the Champions League Union may well have to add one or two more experienced players. In this sense, Gosens is a logical target.
The German has spent several seasons playing Champions League football, with Atalanta and Inter.
Union Berlin CEO: Not Going To Change Course To Sign Robin Gosens
However, Union’s CEO has made clear that the Bundesliga side only intend to move for Gosens if they can do so within the parameters of their existing strategy.
In other words, the Berlin team won’t go all-out in terms of a transfer fee or wages.
Reportedly, Union could offer an initial loan deal for Gosens, containing a purchase option or obligation.
Meanwhile, the 28-year-old is reportedly also a target for Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest, and Bournemouth.
Union CEO Ruhnert explained that “Every day there players are offered to us. That’s not the problem.”
“But it’s about staying true to ourselves and sticking to our plans,” he continued.
“And qualifying for the Champions League hasn’t necessarily made that any easier.”
Ruhnert explained that “We have to think about what kind of footballing project we want to build.”
