Dutch referee Danny Makkelie will be in charge of Tuesday evening’s Champions League group stage match between Inter Milan and Benfica.

This is confirmed by UEFA, via FCInterNews. Fellow Dutch referee Rob Dieperink will be in charge of the VAR for the match.

This week, Inter face their second match in the Champions League group stage.

The Nerazzurri have work to do following a difficult draw away to Real Sociedad in their first match of the group stage.

That match had seen Inter seriously struggle against a La Real team playing a high-tempo pressing game. It took a late Lautaro Martinez goal for the Nerazzurri to snatch a point against the run of play.

Therefore, three points against Benfica would be vital for Inter to get a foothold in their group.

The Nerazzurri faced the Portuguese champions in the quarterfinals of last season’s edition of the competition.

And now the two teams are each vying for a spot in the knockout rounds.

Last time around, Inter’s group stage saw them face the “group of death.” Their group contained Barcelona and Bayern Munich, as well as Viktoria Plzen.

And this season there may not be the same kind of European royalty for Inter to contend with.

But La Real Sociedad proved that they are a force to be reckoned with. And the Nerazzurri will not be underestimating Benfica or Red Bull Salzburg either.

The referee on Tuesday will be experienced Dutch official Danny Makkelie.

Assisting Makkelie in his duties will be Dutch duo Hessel Steegstra and Jan de Vries..

The role of the fourth official, meanwhile, will fall to another Dutchman, Allard Lindhout.

In the VAR booth, Rob Dieperink will oversee the Champions League group stage match.

Assisting Dieperink in his duties will be Slovenian referee Nejc Kajztovic.

Inter will be hoping that the focus stays on the action on the pitch rather than refereeing controversy.
