It is just past 110 years to the day since Inter and Milan contested the first Milan derby way back on October 17 1908, a report from Gazzetta dello Sport details.

The first derby between the Milanese clubs took place in Chiasso, Switzerland as part of the Chiasso Cup. The two clubs travelled side by side to Chiasso on the train and would see off other opponents before reaching the final to face off against one another.

Milan had a two-nil lead at half time, when halves of football games were just 25 minutes long rather than the 45 minutes played today. Inter managed to pull one back but could do no more as the Diavolo would run out as 2-1 winners after the 50 minute affair.

They lifted the trophy in front of 2000 spectators, whose money spent contributed to the prize money that Milan received of 400,000 Swiss Francs which in modern times is equivalent to €350,000. There was no time to stick around and celebrate however as both clubs had to make swift returns to Milan in order to allow those to make their work on the Monday.
