Inter defender Milan Skriniar is not likely to be fit in time to be available for next week’s Champions League quarterfinal first leg match away to Benfica.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that based on the progress of the 28-year-old’s recovery, a return in the clash at the Estadio da Luz does not look to be on the cards.

Skriniar has been working on his recovery from a back injury, which has kept the former Sampdoria player out of action for several matches at club level as well as the Slovakian national team’s two EURO 2024 qualifiers during the international break.

The precise timeline for when the Slovakian will be able to return to the pitch remains unclear, given the nature of his injury.

However, according to the Gazzetta, Skriniar is still feeling significant pain due to the back injury, and so it is not likely that he will be able to return in time for the first leg against Benfica next week.

There has been some disagreement regarding the precise nature of Skriniar’s injury.

The Slovakian national team doctor claimed that the 28-year-old is suffering from damage to an inverterbral disc, however the Nerazzurri doctors disagree with this diagnosis which they consider to be “too alarmist” and to make the problem sound worse than it actually is.

In any event, the player himself has stated that he feels pain all the way from his lower back down to his leg due to the injury.

Meanwhile, the Slovakian made clear in a message on his Instagram account that he has always followed the club doctors’ medical advice and recovery program despite one or two suggestions that he is also being influenced by Paris Saint-Germain doctors not to take too many risks.
