The future of Samir Handanovic at Inter Milan will be heavily linked with that of Man United target Andre Onana.

This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews, who report that the question of whether or not the 38-year-old will stay now that his contract has expired has much to do with whether or not the Nerazzurri sell Andre Onana.

As things stand, Handanovic is no longer under contract with Inter.

The Slovenian’s deal with the club ran out at the end of last month. He has yet to make a decision on whether or not to sign a new contract, or to pursue some path away from the Nerazzurri whether that is a move to a new club or a retirement from playing.

According to Sky, a lot of Handanovic’s decision will come down to the future of Onana.

Samir Handanovic Future At Inter Linked To Andre Onana

Last summer, Inter signed Onana from Ajax as the long-term successor to Handanovic in goal.

Over the course of the season just gone, the 27-year-old made the starting role his own. Handanovic had the odd start here and there, but it was Onana who was entrusted in the biggest matches.

Nerazzurri captain Handanovic had helped Onana settle in initially. However, with the Cameroonian now fully-fledged it seemed as though the 38-year-old would leave with his final task complete.

However, it may not be that simple.

Onana could leave Inter. Man United are reportedly ready to make a big cash offer, and €50 million could be enough to convince the Nerazzurri.

Shakhtar Donetsk’s Anatoliy Trubin and Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili are among the targets Inter have lined up to replace Onana.

That pair are age 21 and 22 respectively. Therefore, there could be some natural growing pains during the settling-in period.

Accordingly, if Onana does leave after one season, then Handanovic could stay on to help the replacement find their feet at the San Siro as he had done with Onana twelve months ago.
