Inter intend to tie midfielder Nicolo Barella down to a new contract soon, according to an Italian media report today.

CalcioMercato.com state that while Barella has garnered the attention of several top clubs, including from Tottenham Hotspur, the Nerazzurri have every intention of giving him a new deal and it shouldn’t take too long to arrive.

Barella has been one of Inter’s best players this season, having taken his performances to the next level after a promising debut campaign under Antonio Conte.

The 24-year-old is reportedly in line to become the club’s next captain after Samir Handanovic and has received praise from the likes of Beppe Bergomi, Nicola Berti and Marcello Lippi.

Barella is already under contract with Inter through to the end of the 2023-24 season and the report did not specify how far Inter plan on extending his contract.

This season the former Cagliari midfielder has made 33 appearances in all competitions, in which he has scored three goals and provided 10 assists.

Barella’s former Italy under-21 boss Luigi Di Biagio thinks he is an example of the perfect modern footballer.
