Genoa are hoping to beat Inter Milan to the signing of Tigre and Italy striker Mateo Retegui this summer.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the contacts are underway as the Ligurian club try to complete a deal to sign the 23-year-old Azzurri man.

Newly-minted Italian international Retegui has been one of the main names on Inter’s list of potential attacking targets for the summer.

Moreover, the likes of Lazio, AC Milan, Atalanta, and Udinese have also shown an interest from within Serie A.

Outside of Italy, Atletico Madrid have shown an interest in signing the 23-year-old striker. Meanwhile, Bundesliga duo Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt have also met with Retegui’s representatives.

Retegui’s status as the top scorer in the Argentine top flight has naturally meant that he is hot property.

Moreover, the two goals that the Azzurri striker scored in his first two caps after Roberto Mancini called him up have only increased the level of interest.

Genoa Want To Rival Inter Milan & Others To Sign Mateo Retegui

Yet another club have entered the race for Retegui’s signature.

Newly-promoted Genoa are hoping to score something of a coup my signing the sought-after striker.

The Grifone are back in Serie A after a season away. And following their promotion from Serie A, Genoa want to do some ambitious business to ensure that they have a strong bid to stay in the top flight.

Whilst the player himself has reportedly considered Inter a priority for this summer, the Nerazzurri’s interest in signing him is no longer certain.

Inter have made signing Romelu Lukaku back from Chelsea into a major priority for the summer. All other attacking ideas would seem to be secondary to that of making sure the Belgian is back at the disposal of Simone Inzaghi.

Accordingly, Genoa could find an opportunity to sign Retegui. There would still be fairly heavy competition.

However, if Inter are out of the race, the Ligurians are hoping to move.

The Gazzetta report that Genoa’s directors are in contact with Retegui’s parent club Boca Juniors. They hope that historically strong relations with the Argentine giants would help facilitate a move.
