Former Inter Milan defender Danilo D’Ambrosio is one step away from joining newly-promoted Genoa on a free transfer.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the 34-year-old has settled on the Grifone as his next destination after departing from Inter at the end of his contract, and should make the move in the next day or two.

D’Ambrosio officially left Inter at the end of last month.

The former Torino defender’s contract with the Nerazzurri reached its end, and the parties did not agree on a new deal.

This ended a nine and a half year association between D’Ambrosio and Inter. The former Italian international joined the Nerazzurri in January of 2014.

With D’Ambrosio now available on a free transfer, a few clubs within Serie A have shown an interest in his signature.

One of these was Monza. Moreover, reports suggested that Lazio were strongly considering bringing D’Ambrosio in to reinforce their defense.

However, it now looks clear that neither the Brianzoli nor the Biancocelesti will sign D’Ambrosio.

Rather, it will be a club who are just back in Serie A after a season in the second division.

Genoa Closing in On The Signing of Danilo D’Ambriosio

According to the Gazzetta, D’Ambrosio has chosen Genoa as his next club.

The Ligurians are back in the top flight after achieving promotion back from Serie B.

Former AC Milan and Juventus striker Alberto Gilardino took charge of Genoa midway through last season. Under the 2006 World Cup winner, the Grifone crested in form and finished the season second in the Serie B table.

Now, the Ligurians are strengthening for life in Serie A.

According to the Gazzetta, D’Ambrosio will be one of the reinforcements that the club make available to Gilardino.

The 34-year-old certainly has no lack of top flight experience.

The Gazzetta report that D’Ambrosio should make the move official in no more than a day or two.
