Monza have overtaken Genoa in the race to sign former Inter Milan defender Danilo D’Ambrosio on a free transfer.

This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, who report that it is now the Brianzoli rather than the Grifone who lead the race to sign the 34-year-old who departed from the Nerazzurri at the end of his contract last month.

D’Ambrosio officially left Inter at the end of last month.

The former Torino defender’s contract with the Nerazzurri reached its end, and the parties did not agree on a new deal.

This ended a nine and a half year association between D’Ambrosio and Inter. The former Italian international joined the Nerazzurri in January of 2014.

With D’Ambrosio now available on a free transfer, a few clubs within Serie A have shown an interest in his signature.

Initially, reports suggested that Lazio were strongly considering bringing D’Ambrosio in to reinforce their defense.

Then, it seemed as though newly-promoted Genoa were close to getting a deal done.

However, it now appears as though D’Ambrosio’s next destination will instead be a destination where he had been linked well before his departure from the Nerazzurri was sealed at the end of last month.

Monza Now Favourites To Sign Danilo D’Ambrosio On A Free Transfer

According to Sky, the team who are now in pole position to sign D’Ambrosio are Monza.

The Lombard team had already made their interest in signing the 34-year-old clear throughout last season.

Moreover, Monza have already signed one player on a free transfer after his contract expired with Inter. Namely, midfielder Roberto Gagliardini.

Now, Sky reports, the Brianzoli are also moving in on signing D’Ambrosio.

Despite the fact that Genoa had been working to do a deal for the veteran, they look unlikely to at the moment. The Ligurians are still focused on offloading some players.

Therefore, it looks as though Monza will win the race for D’Ambrosio’s signature after all.
