Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku could make one last “desperate attempt” to convince Inter Milan to sign him this summer.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Belgian is still holding out a thread of hope that reconciliation will be possible with the Nerazzurri.
As things stand, the situation between Lukaku and Inter looks fairly bleak.
By all appearances, the 30-year-old’s antics in the summer transfer window have seen the bridges burned.
Everyone from Inter President Steven Zhang to the club directors and coaching staff are furious. Even Lukaku’s former teammates reportedly feel confused and hurt.
The nature of the break – Inter’s discovery that after weeks of trying to sign Lukaku from Chelsea, he had been negotiating to join Juventus in parallel, caused them to pull the plug abruptly and decisively on any attempt to bring him back.
Moreover, there are plenty of questions regarding how Inter fans would receive a u-turn.
Nerazzurri ultras group the Curva Nord released a statement in which they scathingly condemned Lukaku as a “traitor.”
Romelu Lukaku Could Still Try To Change Inter’s Mind
According to the Gazzetta, however, Lukaku hasn’t totally given up hope.
The Belgian knows that he wants to stay in European football – the massive money offer from Al-Hilal hasn’t tempted him.
And for his part, the Gazzetta suggests, the Belgian would still like to return to Inter.
Obviously, softening the Nerazzurri’s stance would not be easy. Reportedly, Inter have already closed the door to initial entreaties aimed at reconciling.
But at the same time, the break with Lukaku has forced Inter to look elsewhere for a striker.
And that hasn’t been an easy task in itself. After devoting significant time and energy to talks for Lukaku, the Nerazzurri are having to start from scratch with other targets.
Names like Folarin Balogun, Alvaro Morata, and Gianluca Scamacca are on Inter’s shortlist.
But there’s no guarantee that the Nerazzurri will find the right option for a suitable price.
Therefore, the Gazzetta suggests, Lukaku could still try to convince Inter to put the soap opera in the past on the basis that he can still deliver on the pitch. Then he could try to get on the long road to forgiveness.
