Lautaro Martinez should extend his contract with Inter Milan by the second leg of the team’s Champions League round of sixteen tie against Atletico Madrid.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, anticipate that a new deal for the Nerazzurri captain should finally arrive next month.

So far, Martinez remains on the same contract that he’s been on since 2021.

In the fall of 2021, the Argentine signed an extension until the end of June 2026.

But in recent months, Inter have been keen to secure Martinez’s future on a longer-term basis.

The Nerazzurri have already been aiming to extend the 26-year-old’s deal since the end of last season.

The fact that Martinez became Inter’s captain last summer gave the club additional motivation to want to move negotiations along.

And the fact that there is always transfer interest in a player who has now hit twenty goals in Serie A alone this season is certainly one more incentive.

The Gazzetta note that Martinez will be one of Paris Saint-Germain’s targets as far as planning for life after Kylian Mbappe. It would be hard to overlook the Argentine given his form this season.

Meanwhile, the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur have all targeted the Nerazzurri striker in the recent past.

He has also been on the radars of Barcelona and Manchester City at points.

Lautaro Martinez To Extend Inter Contract In Mid-March

Since the fall, contract extension talks between Inter and Martinez have been ongoing.

But so far, the negotiations have not resulted in a decisive agreement.

Reports had initially suggested that Inter hoped to see Martinez put pen to paper sometime in January.

But that has now come and gone without the 26-year-old extending his deal.

Moreover, Martinez’s agent has made clear that there is no agreement on an extension yet. And he hinted clearly at the reason – the Inter captain expects a higher offer.

But all parties have expressed confidence that a new deal for Martinez will come sooner or later.

That is what the club want, and what the player wants.

And according to the Gazzetta, there is a likely date by which point Martinez will sign his new deal. March 13th.

That is when Inter play the second leg of their Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid.

And the newspaper anticipate that the club’s captain should commit his future by that point.

The Gazzetta report that some personal problems for Martinez’s agent have held up talks a bit. But only temporarily.
