Arsenal’s Folarin Balogun and free agent Alexis Sanchez are in the running to replace Joaquin Correa should he leave Inter Milan this summer.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews, who report that the Nerazzurri are considering both of the pair as they plan for the possible exit of the our-of-favour Correa.
The future of ex-Lazio forward Correa at Inter has looked up in the air for this summer.
On the one hand, the player is clearly no longer in favour at the Nerazzurri. All reports suggest that the club’s directors are ready to give up and offload the Argentine after two underwhelming seasons.
Even coach Simone Inzaghi, the main sponsor of bringing Correa in from Lazio, would reportedly be happy to see the player leave.
But on the other, finding suitors for the out-of-form Argentine would be no easy feat.
Correa has struggled with niggling injuries over his two seasons at Inter. These have disrupted the Argentine’s form, and would naturally make clubs wary about taking a chance on signing him.
So far this summer Fenerbahce have shown an interest in signing Correa. However, the player has rejected the possibility.
Meanwhile, Premier League duo West Ham United and Everton are reportedly in with a tentative interest.
Inter Considering Balogun & Sanchez To Replace Correa
Inter will continue to listen to offers for Correa throughout the remaining weeks of the transfer window.
The Saudi Pro League could be a destination.
And if the Nerazzuri are to offload the Argentine, then they’d have a couple ideas to replace him.
Inter are already moving in on the signing of Gianluca Scamacca from West Ham United.
The 24-year-old Italian international would add physicality and a reference point in attack.
Therefore, if Inter are to replace Correa they would look for a different kind of profile – more of a second striker than an out-and-out centre-forward like the Italian.
One target would be Arsenal’s Balogun.
22-year-old US international certainly would not come cheap. But he is a big name in the Nerazzurri’s notebook, and they are still keeping tabs.
If Inter were to sell Correa for a decent fee, they could well make their attempt to bring in Balogun.
The other possibility would be a completely different type of target – a low-cost veteran attacker.
Alexis Sanchez only left Inter twelve months ago. But with the Chilean available on a free transfer following the end of his contract with Marseille, the Nerazzurri could see bringing him back for a season or two as a perfect stopgap solution to replace Correa.
